For Premium Users, Spotify Releases A New Playlist Mixing Tool

By adding a new option that lets Premium customers add and alter transitions between tracks, Spotify is giving music lovers more control over their playlists.

The tool, which is presently in beta for Premium customers, enables both playlist professionals and music lovers to enhance their playlists with features like volume, EQ, and effect curves and add smooth transitions between tracks, giving the impression that the playlist is a DJ set rather than just a queue of songs.

Fans can enjoy their favorite music in the best possible way with Spotify Premium, and we’re always improving it. In a news release on Tuesday, Spotify stated, “We hope to empower users to shape their listening experience and express themselves through the music they love with custom transitions in playlists.”

Both automated and manual options are available with the newly added “Mix” button in the playlist toolbar. The “Auto” option allows listeners to blend music instantaneously, or they can select from pre-made transition styles including Fade and Rise. The feature offers precise controls for audio effects, equalization, and volume for more sophisticated control. To ensure a smooth transition, users can also check waveform and beat data to identify exact transition points.

Spotify will soon show each track’s Camelot key and beats per minute (BPM) to help with better mixing. This will make it simpler for Premium users to create playlists based on tempo and tonality for more seamless, timing-matched transitions. This makes it easier to make playlists that don’t have awkward pauses or sudden transitions, whether they’re for parties, road trips, or exercises. Listeners can toggle transitions on and off at any moment, and mixed playlists can be stored, shared, or even co-edited with others.

Beyond simple technical adjustments, Premium users may also add unique cover art, stickers, and labels to their mixed playlists, as well as invite others to work together. Listeners can toggle the functionality on or off at any moment by simply tapping the Mix button, which will return them to the classic playlist experience.

With around 9 billion playlists already published on the platform, Spotify claims that the functionality is intended for both casual users and playlist “experts.” Giving fans more choice over transitions, according to the music streaming behemoth, can only increase engagement. According to the business, the tool is most effective when used with genres like house and techno, which are frequently created for smooth mixing.

This update arrives as competition in streaming rises. A direct competitor to Spotify’s offering, Apple Music recently gave a sneak peek at its AutoMix feature in the iOS 26 developer beta, indicating a rising trend of streaming services shifting toward DJ-style capability. Spotify is establishing itself as a more versatile destination for music discovery and listening experiences by incorporating portable DJ gear into its platform.

The new playlist mixing capability is gradually trickling out to most Premium subscribers worldwide, with a staggered rollout continuing in specific APAC areas. When the new feature is released, Spotify advises users to update to the most recent version of the app on iOS or Android in order to take use of it.

For the time being, Spotify is giving users more control than ever before, whether they are creating their daily soundtrack, a workout mix, or the atmosphere for a house party.
